Mark Twain is quoted as having said, “Quitting smoking is easy. I’ve done it hundreds of times.” His statement describes what many patients struggle with in addictive disorders—that it is easier to stop an addictive behavior than to -remain that way—that is, to achieve sustained abstinence. Substance use dis-orders are common and may manifest as a substantial factor in the medical histories of patients treated in all areas of medicine. Yet only a small percentage of patients who need help with these disorders seek treatment. Some seek help through their primary care physician whereas others need treatment from psychiatrists for co-occurring mental health disorders. Some become involved in self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous.
