Sexual offending is, unfortunately, a common occurrence. Although child sexual abuse is likely underreported, international rates range from 7% to 36% for girls and from 3% to 29% for boys (Finkelhor 1994; Stoltenborgh et al. 2011). Rates of rape and sexual assault are similarly high: in 2012 and 2013, over 1 in 1,000 persons in the United States over age 12 was sexually assaulted (Truman and Langton 2014).
