The focus of physical medicine and rehabilitation, or rehabilitation medicine, is helping people reach the fullest physical, psychological, social, vocational, and educational potential consistent with their physiological or anatomical impairment, environmental limitations, and desires and life plans. Patients in the rehabilitation setting are highly diverse, and their problems range from acute to chronic and can involve nearly any organ system. Rehabilitation can take place in outpatient, inpatient, extended-care, and in-home programs and includes both prevention and treatment. Maximizing independence is central to the goal of optimizing quality of life.
