Individuals who receive treatment for a traumatic brain injury (TBI) at the time of their injury and beyond access a complex system of care that includes medical, rehabilitation, and health care providers and organizations; educational programs and institutions; and disability and human services, all of which are financed by private and public payers. These systems have different missions, use different terminology, and have different eligibility criteria for access. The system components include primary and secondary prevention, emergency medical services (EMS), organized trauma and acute care, rehabilitation, and community-based short-term and long-term services and supports. These system components are designed to facilitate recovery from injury, to mitigate disability, and to assist individuals in their return to home, community, school, and work. Underpinning these systems are data and research to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitative services provided.
