Chapter 8.Essential Treatment Contracting: Behaviors, Adjunctive Treatments, and Medication
Sections
Excerpt
The treatment contract in transference-focused psychotherapy—extended (TFP-E) establishes the treatment frame and ensures that the patient understands and agrees upon the necessary conditions for treatment. The process of contracting picks up where the consultation leaves off, further developing a working relationship between patient and therapist by specifically defining the role of each party in the treatment to follow. The treatment contract grounds the treatment in reality and recognizes the limitations of both patient and therapist. As the severity of personality pathology increases, threats to the contract also increase (Links et al. 2016).
