The misuse of alcohol or other drugs is widespread and growing. Nearly two-thirds of adult Americans occasionally drink alcohol, and 12% drink almost every day and become intoxicated several times a month. Marijuana has been used by more than one-quarter of Americans, and nearly 6 million have admitted using cocaine in the prior year. Patterns of use change, however, reflecting the fluctuating popularity of drugs, and their availability and cost.
