APA Journals Get New Look, New Features

New design brings cohesive look to the four journals under the American Psychiatric Publishing umbrella, while other enhancements will improve navigation and the reader experience.
If anyone made a New Year’s resolution to spend more time reading journals from American Psychiatric Publishing (APP), he or she picked a good time. This month, all four APP journals—American Journal of Psychiatry, Psychiatric Services, Journal of Neuropsychiatry, and Focus—are unveiling a new appearance and enhanced features.
This redesign stems from an interest in developing a unifying brand for the four journals. The publications will continue to provide distinct content, but the cohesive look reinforces the connection to APP and its efforts to provide the highest quality psychiatric publications. The redesign is also intended to align the journals’ print and online versions, to further streamline the reading experience.
While the vibrant new look is appealing, and perhaps highly appreciated for long-time readers of a journal series that has not been visually updated in a while, more pronounced reader benefits emerge beyond the cover.
Each journal’s table of contents features short takeaway messages of major articles, such as brief descriptions of clinical implications of studies; articles are also highlighted with symbols representing relevant core competencies for medical education. These latter changes reflect APA’s commitment to providing continuing medical education opportunities for its members.

Don’t Forget AJP’s Journal for Residents and Fellows

While the new print editions of the APP journal family are making news, APA wants to remind members that the American Journal of Psychiatry Residents’ Journal also recently underwent a transformation and features new visuals and content. The Residents’ Journal is an online-only publication edited by and serving psychiatry residents and fellows. This journal provides a forum for young psychiatrists to get a feel for the scientific-publication process. See more here.
While the navigational changes reflect the clinical interests of many APA members, they do not signify a change in the journals’ missions. They will continue to publish research in a variety of arenas and to publish accepted articles online as soon as they are ready for publication, so that important new discoveries reach the scientific community quickly.
The online portals for the American Journal of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Services now also feature videos by editors discussing various topics, including the decisions that led to accepting the manuscripts appearing in that particular issue. Upgrades will continue, as the new web platform that has been hosting the online journal content since last October is more customizable than the previous platform.
These enhancements should bring a smile to APP journal subscribers both old and new, as they deliver essential content in psychiatry in a streamlined, reader-friendly format. ■
