Brooklyn DB Holds 5K Fun Run/Walk and Meet & Greet

Last fall the Brooklyn Psychiatric Society, one of APA’s New York district branches (DBs), combined an informal competition with an opportunity for networking and educating the public about mental health in its Second Annual 5K Fun Run/Walk and Meet & Greet. The event attracted a strong turnout of trainees and faculty representing Brooklyn’s three psychiatry residency programs—SUNY-Downstate, Maimonides Medical Center, and Brookdale University Hospital—and other psychiatrists in the community, as well as family members and friends. Attendees were given commemorative T-shirts and water bottles, as well as an ample supply of healthy food and drink to fuel up for and recover from running, walking, or cheering on others who were competing.
The BPS also took advantage of the event to distribute APA’s mental health educational pamphlets to community members in the park, as well as to answer their questions.
The organizing team included Linda Majowka (DB executive director) and Drs. Ramaswamy Viswanathan (event chair), Thulasiram Janardhanan (DB president), Lenore Engel, Maria Bodic, Geetanjali Sahu, Subhash Chandra, and Raj Loungani. ■
