Workshop to Give Glimpse Into Future of DSM, Opportunities for Input

Following the release of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in May 2013, APA initiated preliminary planning for the development of a model to address iterative updates to DSM-5 and future editions moving forward. The workshop “Future of DSM: An Update from the DSM Steering Committee” will help psychiatrists better understand the future conceptualization of DSM and the process by which forthcoming versions of the manual will be generated. The session will be led by Paul Appelbaum, M.D., chair of the DSM Steering Committee, and will feature presentations from Vice Chair Kenneth Kendler, M.D., and Michael B. First, M.D.

Speakers will describe the activities of the DSM Steering Committee, including the criteria and procedures they have developed for instituting changes to DSM. Attendees also will learn how interested clinicians and researchers are being encouraged to participate in this inclusive process.

Among the topics that will be covered in the session are an introduction to the DSM revision process, criteria for revision of the DSM, and the process for DSM revision. There will be ample time for audience discussion. ■

The workshop will be held Monday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room B306, Level 3, Building B, of the Georgia World Congress Center.
