Finalists Announced for 2017 MindGames at Annual Meeting

Three residency programs—from the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) at Houston, New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI)/Columbia University Medical Center, and Washington University in St. Louis—are the finalist teams in this year’s MindGames competition.

They will compete for the top prize at APA’s 2017 Annual Meeting in San Diego on Tuesday, May 23.

The finalists were announced at the meeting of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT) in San Francisco in March. Now in its 11th year, MindGames tests the teams’ knowledge of medicine in general, psychiatry in particular, and patient-care issues. This year’s host will be Art Walaszek, M.D., past president of AADPRT, replacing Glen Gabbard, M.D., who hosted the event for 10 years since its introduction in 2006. MindGames has since become a popular attraction at the meeting.

The trainees who will be playing for UTHSC, Houston, are Tyler Kimm, M.D., Travis Hendryx, M.D., and Manu Sharma, M.D.; for NYSPI/Columbia: Anthony Zoghbi, M.D., Wei-Li Chang, M.D., Ph.D., and Joel Bernanke, M.D.; and for Washington University, St. Louis: Shan Siddiqi, M.D., Ludwig Trillo, M.D., and Nicholas Trapp, M.D.

MindGames is open to all psychiatry residency programs in the United States and Canada. The preliminary competition for this year’s game began in February, when teams of three residents took a 60-minute online test consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions. The questions follow the ABPN Part I content outline, covering both psychiatry and neurology, with a few difficult history-of-psychiatry questions to make it interesting. The winners were the three top-scoring teams with the fastest posted times. ■

MindGames will be held Tuesday, May 23, 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. in Ballroom 6DE in the San Diego Convention Center.
