APA President Honored for Work in Addiction Psychiatry

Outgoing APA President Petros Levounis, M.D., M.A., accepts the John P. McGovern, M.D., Award of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) from ASAM President Brian Hurley, M.D. The McGovern award was established in 1997 to recognize and honor individuals who have made highly meritorious contributions to public policy, treatment, research, or prevention that has increased the understanding of the relationship of addiction and society. Levounis devoted his presidential year at APA to creating numerous educational resources on substance use disorders and engaging in public outreach to convey the message that effective treatments are available.
The award was presented in April at the opening session of ASAM’s 55th annual conference in Grapevine, Texas. The award is sponsored by an endowment from the John P. McGovern Foundation. ■
