Appreciation to Reviewers

A wonderful and wise teacher and mentor of mine during residency once told me not to worry if I could not immediately understand what patients were trying to tell me, because sooner or later, if I listened patiently enough, they would make it clear. What do these words of advice have to do with expressing thanks to our reviewers? Well, they apply to my listening to the journal's editorial board. Since the journal began 50 years ago, we've increasingly moved toward publishing articles based not on our own experience but on scientific evidence. And the editorial board has been telling me that we must go even further. So in 2001 we will focus on evidence-based psychiatry.

What difference will this focus make for you, the reviewer? For most reviewers, not much. You already know the literature in your field of expertise and stay abreast of new developments. In completing your review, you already ask whether the authors' conclusions are new and whether they are based on generally accepted, scientifically grounded evidence. For other reviewers, it will mean subjecting each article to these tests and making sure you know the literature and current developments. It should be an exciting year.
