Why Drug Companies?

APA runs fellowship programs for approximately 140 residents a year, sponsored by pharmaceutical and federal government sources. In general, the fellowships allow residents to come to APA meetings and participate in APA components. Among the components to which a small number of fellows from several of these programs are assigned is the Board of Trustees. Apart from providing the funding for the programs, the pharmaceutical companies play no role whatsoever in the selection of the fellows or in controlling any aspect of their activities. The residents who attend the Board meetings, like their colleagues who are assigned to other components, have the opportunity to learn from and participate in the proceedings. But in no way do they represent an “ear” for the sponsoring companies at the Board.

By the way, Board meetings are open to all APA members (except for executive sessions), and anyone who is interested in seeing how the Board operates is welcome to attend.
