New Journal

Good news: APA has announced publication of a new journal, Focus: The Journal of Lifelong Learning in Psychiatry.
Bad news: APA members have to pay (after December 31) $299 for a one-year subscription.
At a time when APA is trying desperately to recruit new members and retain existing members, it should provide a subscription to its new journal as a membership benefit. Charging an additional $299 a year for a new journal, which it promotes as “a primary tool that psychiatrists can use to maintain board certification,” is an indirect way of increasing membership dues.
Deborah Hales, M.D., director of APA’s Division of Education, Minority, and National Programs, responds:
We wish we could produce a new and useful journal free to our members, but the cost of starting up a journal that includes a year-end self-assessment exam is very expensive. We have made every effort, however, to keep the cost as low as possible. To compare, a one-year subscription to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ PREP (Pediatrics Review and Education Program) is $259 for members, and a one-year subscription to the American Neurological Association’s Continuum is $299 for members (nonmember costs are much higher).
APA’s Division of Education, Minority, and National Programs is working on several new initiatives that are free and are not funded by pharmaceutical companies:
• APA’s online CME courses (with the exception of the buprenorphine course).
• Grand Rounds Online. This is a list serve–based CME discussion for APA members only and can be accessed from the Members Corner on the APA Web site at www.psych.org. The program offers two CME hours a month, with each discussion lasting one month.
• We are investigating the possibility of offering CME credit for APPI textbooks and other APA journals.
APA is working hard to make continuing education of practicing psychiatrists a top priority. I welcome any comments or ideas you have for other programs or courses. You can reach me at [email protected].
