Learn the Latest on HIV Psychiatry

APA's Office of HIV Psychiatry and the Committee on AIDS will offer several programs at APA's 2005 annual meeting to address the mental health and well-being of HIV-infected patients. Geared to psychiatrists with varying levels of expertise, this year's programs will provide updated information on HIV-related complications and treatments.
Sunday, May 22, Noon-4 p.m.
“Residents Program”
The Committee on AIDS will present “Mission: Cognition—Assessing and Treating Neuropsychiatric Syndromes in HIV.” The workshop, designed for psychiatry residents, will provide practical information including “10 Things You Need to Know About HIV Psychiatry.” There will also be sessions on neuropsychiatric assessment and substance use assessment. Skill-building exercises and case discussions will focus on mock interviewing and role playing. Those interested in attending must call (703) 907-8641 by May 1.
Monday, May 23, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
“Using the HIV Dementia Scale in the Clinical Setting”
In this highly interactive component workshop, presenters will review the use of the HIV Dementia Scale and will offer information on its implications and limitations. Participants will be able to address individual clinical concerns during the question-and-answer period.
Tuesday, May 24, 2 p.m.-5 p.m.

“Real-Life Medical Management of HIV”

Psychiatrists will offer five short sessions on the medical management of HIV infection. An update on HIV treatment will be given, followed by presentations on managing mood disorders; managing hepatitis C, syphilis, and HIV; managing psychosis; and managing metabolic syndromes. Clinical cases will be used as examples. A question-and-answer period will allow time to share clinical concerns.
