Applications Invited for Capitol Hill Fellowship

APA and the American Psychiatric Foundation, in collaboration with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, invite nominations for the Jeanne Spurlock Congressional Fellowship.

The fellowship provides general psychiatry and child psychiatry residents an opportunity to work in a congressional office or committee on federal health policy, particularly policy related to child and minority issues.

This fellowship was established in honor of the late Jeanne Spurlock, M.D., who was deputy medical director of APA's Office of Minority/National Affairs and an advocate for child and minority issues.

The recipient will serve a six-month fellowship on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., starting January 1, 2007, and ends June 30, 2007. The fellow will be introduced to the structure and development of federal and congressional health policy, with a focus on mental health issues affecting children and minorities. Fellows traditionally help develop legislative proposals, track and analyze legislative initiatives, arrange hearings, brief members of Congress and staff, and interact with constituents.

The fellowship is open to APA members who are PGY-2 or PGY-3 general psychiatry residents, child psychiatry residents, or child psychiatrists who will be out of training for less than one year at the time of the fellowship. This fellowship is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Wyeth.
