Candidates Announced

The Assembly Nominating Committee last month announced the candidates it selected to run for the Assembly's two top elected positions.
For speaker-elect the nominees are Robert Benson, M.D., a representative of the Florida Psychiatric Society, and Gary Weinstein, M.D., of Kentucky, the Assembly's recorder.
The contest to replace Weinstein as recorder will be one of the Assembly's rare three-way races. The committee's nominees for recorder are Bruce Hershfield, M.D., the Assembly's Area 3 representative, and Ramaswamy Viswanathan, M.D., representative of the Brooklyn Psychiatric Society. In addition, Area 4 Representative Jo-Ellyn Ryall, M.D., of Missouri was nominated from the floor.
The election for speaker-elect and recorder will be held during the Assembly's next meeting, which will be in May in Washington, D.C., prior to the opening of APA's 2008 annual meeting. At the close of that Assembly meeting the current speaker-elect, Ronald Burd, M.D., will begin a one-year term as speaker.
