Best Practice Award

This year's winner of the APA Assembly's Best Practice Award is the Ontario District Branch (DB), which was recognized for its “Psychiatric Salon” program.
The Ontario DB's Assembly representatives, Joseph Berger, M.D., and Garry Shomair, M.D., described the program as an event “that takes place in a restaurant where we meet first for dinner, followed by a presentation by one or more psychiatrists from our district branch who contribute their knowledge and expertise without us having to pay for an honorarium.”
Since members—and prospective members—who attend pay for their own meal, the district branch incurs only the cost of paying for the meal of the featured speaker(s). This is, they noted, an inexpensive way for their members to receive CME credit while taking advantage of an opportunity for collegiality. Berger and Shomair credited Ontario DB member Frank Sommers, M.D., with creating the program.
The award, which comes with an engraved plaque, was established in 2002“ to recognize the efforts and innovative programs of a district branch in the past year.” ▪
