Psychiatrists spoke and APA listened. Among the more than 80 course offerings at this year's annual meeting is a new track of courses directed by three master lecturers. The Clinical Knowledge and Skills Series consists of three, day-long sessions on the practical application of advances in different clinical disciplines: cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and neuropsychiatry.
“We're responding to what some members have been asking for—something a little more advanced, not just for new practicing psychiatrists but also for those who have been practicing for a longer period that more meets their needs,” Joy Raether, APA's associate director for conference and online continuing medical education, told Psychiatric News.
The three courses were selected based on “the popularity of the faculty and topics,” explained Michele Pato, M.D., chair of the Scientific Program Subcommittee on Courses.
Jesse Wright, M.D., will lead the course “Practical Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT).” He is a professor and associate chair for academic affairs at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The prestigious faculty includes Judith Beck, Ph.D., Robert Goisman, M.D., and Donna Sudak, M.D. Through lectures and skill-building drills, attendees will master both the core essentials and finer points of CBT.
The course “Practical Psychodynamic Psychotherapy” will be given by Glenn Gabbard, M.D., chair of psychoanalysis at the Brown Foundation and a professor of psychiatry at Baylor College of Medicine. He will be joined by Thomas Gutheil, M.D., John Gunderson, M.D., and Barbara Milrod, M.D. They will augment course participants' knowledge of the basic precepts and skills used in psychodynamic psychotherapy—from how to begin and end therapy to how to formulate and execute intervention goals. A case study will be presented.
The third course, “Advances in Neuropsychiatry,” will be led by C. Edward Coffey, M.D. He is a neuropsychiatrist at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, where he is vice president and CEO of Behavioral Health Services and the Kathleen and Earl Ward Professor and Chair of Psychiatry. The course faculty will be Jeffrey L. Cummings, M.D., Mark S. George, M.D., and Nancy Minshew, M.D.
