In writing this book, we had a series of objectives in mind: 1) to describe a psychodynamically based model of personality and personality pathology that focuses on self and interpersonal functioning; 2) to present a clinically near approach to classification and assessment of personality pathology, one that carries direct implications for treatment; 3) to offer clinicians an integrated, psychodynamically based treatment model for personality disorders that combines structure and limit-setting with psychological exploration; and 4) to outline general clinical principles that apply to treatment across the spectrum of personality pathology, coupled with 5) an understanding of specific modifications of technique that tailor treatment to the individual patient, based on the severity and nature of his pathology, and his moment-to-moment psychological functioning.
