In writing this second edition of Learning Cognitive-Behavior Therapy: An Illustrated Guide, we have been especially mindful of the transformative work of our principal mentor and teacher, Aaron T. Beck, M.D. When he began his studies on cognitive processing over 50 years ago, there were no evidence-based psychosocial treatments for mental disorders. Now there is abundant evidence that cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) is effective for a wide range of psychiatric conditions. And CBT has become a first-line treatment method that is bringing symptom relief to many thousands of patients throughout the world. This book is an outgrowth of his contributions in proposing the core principles of CBT, leading and inspiring a decades-long research effort, and imparting wisdom in a career lasting through very old age.
