In 2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies issued a groundbreaking report on the health (including mental health) of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people (Institute of Medicine 2011). The IOM organized the findings using a three-part life course framework: childhood/adolescence, early/middle adulthood, and later adulthood.
