The History of Psychiatry: Its Relevance for the Psychiatrist

Publication: American Journal of Psychiatry

Abstract

To mark the closing of the APA's 125th anniversary year, the author examines recent progress in the study of the history of psychiatry. He outlines the reasons why the historical study of attitudes toward mental illness and methods of treatment in psychiatry merit proper consideration in the training of psychiatrists, and he reviews some of the steps being taken to meet this need.
