Abstract

Three modes of the science of psychoanalysis are identified: (1) the domain mode, which is established simply by identifying the area of nature that psychoanalysis proposes to study (human emotional development and functioning); also characteristic is a scientific attitude and disciplined direct observation; (2) the statistical mode, which is characterized by the use of quantifiable variables, and statistical and stochastic methods; (3) formal mode, which uses time-series observations of quantified data and mathematical treatments in a search for the deep laws of nature. Each mode of science contributes to the field and yet suffers from particular limitations.
