Treatment Issues with Borderline Patients and the Psychosomatic Focus

Abstract

This article deals with intensive analytically oriented psychotherapy with borderline patients. In this form of intervention, regression is considered to be an essential element. The role of a holding environment is stressed. Extensive discussion of clinical material offers a direct view into the psychoanalytic process with highly regressed individuals. Borderline patients with underlying structural deficits are distinguished from those who actively use splitting and projection as defenses.
