Adolescent Psychotherapy Research: A Practical Review

Abstract

Due to methodologic flaws in the existing research, psychotheapy outcome research with children and adolescents has not yet demonstrated indisputable evidence for the efficacy of individual psychotherapy. However, the majority of review studies, including meta-analyses with special attention to internal and external validity, support the efficacy of this form of treatment with young people. This paper reviews these studies, highlights the factors thought to be important in outcome studies to date, and offers specific practical recommendations to design and evaluate future research.
