Abstract

The developmental transformations during pregnancy provide a unique opportunity for brief, conflict-focused psychotherapy. Four psychotherapy themes are described, using illustrative clinical cases: conflicts over dependency needs, narcissistic disturbances, reconciliative themes, and working through losses while giving life. A discussion follows of the work with families and of various transference phenomena.
