Treatment for Multiple Personality Disorder: At What Cost?

Abstract

The author examines the costs of treating multiple personality disorder (MPD), and reaches the following conclusions: First, the condition is almost certainly overdiagnosed, with a resulting increase in total costs for mental health services. Second, it is unlikely that psychotherapy of the disorder produces results in a reasonable period of time. Third, most clinicians will not be able to duplicate the results claimed by the leading contributors to the MPD literature. Contrary to the position stated in another recent paper, psychotherapy of MPD is not a cost-effective mental health intervention.
