Problems in Diagnosing the Disorders of Infancy, Childhood, and Adolescence

Abstract

This last column of the DSM-III Forum focuses on the diagnosis of disorders usually first evident in infancy, childhood, or adolescence according to the third edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III). This set of disorders, which begins DSM-III itself, has been the subject of much controversy and many questions. The purpose ofthis month's column is to address the most important of those issues.
Although this column is the last in the series, readers may continue to send questions to Dr. Williams at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, 722 West 168th Street, New York, New York 10032, for informal answers.
