Moment-to-Moment Interventions and Mechanisms of Change

Sections

Techniques of TFP | Characteristics of Skillful Interpretation | Further Elements in the Process of Interpretation | Active Role of the Therapist | Techniques Not Used in TFP | Commentary on Videos that Illustrate Techniques

Excerpt

The techniques of transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) are the moment-to-moment interventions the therapist addresses to the -patient in the therapy session. In this chapter, we describe in detail the four basic techniques used in TFP: interpretation, transference analysis, technical neutrality, and countertransference. We discuss the techniques individually, but the reader must remember that there is a constant interplay of the techniques and their relation to the treatment frame in the therapist’s mind.
