This chapter addresses the psychiatric care of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT), and gender-nonconforming individuals. Today, psychiatric focus is on treating depression, anxiety, trauma, or other diagnoses in LGBT patients as well as addressing problems encountered in living as an LGBT or gender-nonconforming person. As a minority population facing a high degree of stress and discrimination, LGBT and gender-nonconforming individuals are at greater risk for poor mental health outcomes and may use mental health care services at higher rates compared with heterosexual cisgender patients. Mental health professionals must be sensitive to the needs of LGBT and gender-nonconforming persons.
