Chapter 3.Normalizing and Educating
Sections
Excerpt
This chapter explains the crucial CBT technique of normalizing and then details related educational approaches. Normalizing has been termed one of the most important CBT techniques in the treatment of schizophrenia (Dudley et al. 2007). This fundamental element of CBT for psychosis forms the basis of a collaborative reality-testing approach. The chapter begins with the use of normalizing in schizophrenia, procedures first described by Kingdon and Turkington (1991). We also illustrate how normalizing methods can be helpful in the treatment of bipolar disorder and unipolar depression. The final section of the chapter discusses the important role of psychoeducation in treatment of severe mental illness and lists valuable educational resources for clinical practice.
