Altered central serotonergic function is implicated in several psychiatric disorders, especially mood and anxiety disorders. Discovery of the serotonin-1A (5-HT1A) receptor linked modulation of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) neurotransmission to anxiety symptoms. Similarly, tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) linked serotonin to the pathophysiology and treatment of depression.
