New Rule on Confidentiality of Substance Use Records: What You Need to Know

For the first time in 30 years, the Department of Health and Human Services has updated its regulations for 42 CFR Part 2, Confidentiality of Substance Use Disorder Patient Records. The updated regulations, scheduled to go into effect on March 21, will allow for better information sharing while balancing the privacy rights for people seeking treatment for substance use issues. To help you understand the changes, APA has posted information about the rule, including a summary and comparison of the current and new rules. ■
