Twelve Cognitive Errors about Multiple Personality Disorder

Abstract

Multiple personality disorder has been diagnosed with increasing frequency during the 1980s. However, it is still viewed with extreme skepticism by many mental health professionals. This skepticism is founded in part on twelve cognitive errors about the disorder. The errors include the mistaken idea that multiple personality patients actually harbor more than one personality, that they can evade responsibility for their behavior because of their diagnosis, and that the disorder will disappear if treated with benign neglect. The twelve errors are corrected by argument and by reference to recent research findings.
