Abstract

A private psychiatric hospital that developed comprehensive community mental health services was able to reduce admissions to state hospitals from its catchment area to two-thirds less than the state average over a 12-year period. This was accomplished without the use of state funding for inpatient care. The author describes the various programs developed in collaboration with community representatives and other agencies, which have significantly reduced the need for state hospital care.
